Position Description

Under supervision, the Studio Arts Technician/Museum Preparator will coordinate the operation of instructional art studios and equipment; maintain inventory of instructional materials and monitor budgets through Excel; perform routine inspection and maintenance of lab equipment and oversee the operation of power equipment; provide instructional support to students and faculty; and train student workers in the studio and museum.


  • Oversee the operation and maintenance of the instructional art studios, facilities, woodshop, and museum shop;
  • Oversee the operation, maintenance, and installations in Student Galleries;
  • Maintain safe and effective facilities and equipment that are up to professional industry standards;
  • Operate, maintain, and repair a variety of laboratory equipment in the art facilities and galleries, including: table saws, band saws, drill press, scroll saw, radial arm saw, sanding center, compound miter saw, compressors, small hand tools, easels, and drawing horses;
  • Source materials, supplies, and equipment and research new technologies to meet programmatic needs; assist faculty and museum staff in maintaining inventory records on equipment, supplies, and other instructional materials;
  • Responsible for inventory, purchasing, and preparation of requisitions for supplies and equipment; pick up studio art and museum supplies from local vendors;
  • Maintain a high level of health and safety, including maintaining first aid kits and disposing of hazardous materials, in the instructional studio areas, student galleries, and Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art; coordinate with the district's Chemical Hygiene Officer;
  • Develop safety protocol for the woodshop and provide training to faculty, students, and museum staff, in the use of shop equipment;
  • Oversee and provide direction to students utilizing laboratory equipment and tools ensuring a safe environment in the museum and laboratories at all times;
  • Direct the work of short-term workers, federal work study students, and apprentices; provide administrative program support as needed;
  • Assist faculty, museum staff, and students with the installation and fabrication of exhibition furniture in the Student Invitational and other exhibitions at the Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art;
  • Pack and crate artworks, transport and ship artworks, preparation of gallery facilities, lighting design, and basic museum standards as they relate to the museum space;
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
